Investigation report of Gaibandha-5 seat by-election in EC
Our Islam Desk: A report has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC) after investigating the incident of Gaibandha-5 seat by-election, which was closed due to various allegations of irregularities.
The investigation committee submitted the report to EC Secretary Humayun Kabir Khondkar on Thursday (October 27).
Ashok Kumar Debnath, head of the investigation committee and additional secretary of the EC, confirmed the matter to the media.
However, he did not agree to speak to the media about the investigation report.
The other two members of the three-member inquiry committee are EC joint secretary Kamal Uddin Biswas and Shahedunnabi Chowdhury.
The Election Commission stopped voting in the Gaibandha-5 by-election held on October 12, citing irregularities. The EC announced the closure of polling in 51 polling stations in phases after observing the polls on CCTV cameras. Later, the voting of that by-election was completely stopped.
Meanwhile, Awami League candidates and party leaders have demanded the announcement of the results of the remaining centers except the suspended centers. Five candidates contested in the by-election of this seat. They are Awami League nominated candidate Mahmud Hassan, Jatiya Party (JPA) AHM Golam Shahid, Alternative Dhara nominated Jahangir Alam, independent candidate Nahiduzzaman and Syed Mahbubur Rahman. Apart from the Awami League candidate, the remaining four abstained from voting at noon.
Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker elected from this constituency, Fazle Rabbi died on July 23 while undergoing treatment in the United States. Then Election Commission declared the seat vacant.
